- A conspiracy between man and nature This article examines the heavy rainfall that devastated the countryside around Siena in the autumn of 1318 and the subsequent great erosion, combining political, cultural and economic perspectives. In doing so, it highlights surprising interactions between nature and culture and presents Siena and its surroundings in the second decade of the 14th century as a socio-natural site (Winiwarter/Schmid). Not only does it show how the wastelands of southern Tuscany, the Crete Senesi, came into being and date their emergence plausibly for the first time. It also shows how a regionally limited weather phenomenon influenced the political history of Siena and shook the constitutional foundations of the city. The event was also exploited by inventive individuals for their own benefit and, not least, indirectly promoted the flourishing of a monastic community that still thrives today in an extremely precarious location.
