Title:: Relations of the city of Berlin to the different public industries

customers the same terms, extremely low gas-prices, con- sidering those days, were inaugurated. At first this co-existence of the English and the city gas-works, owing to the legal dubiousness of some of the privileges of the English Company, led to a series of law- suits. At last, however, an agreement was brought about satisfying both parties. The sphere of the English Com- pany comprised those parts of Berlin that belonged to the neighbouring community of Schéneberg (the so-called Pots- dam quarter to the south of the canal) where it has the exclusive right of supplying gas, and the older quarters of Berlin so far as they were covered with houses in 1826. In these districts the gas-conduits of both administrations are laid side by side, and both works furnish gas to the consumers living there. To prevent any serious conflict from rising between the two parties, it was settled which properties are to take gas from the city and which from the English works. Thus the concurrent working proved verv satisfactorv. The result of the above reduction of the gas-prices after the establishment of the first municipal gas-works, was a rapid increase of the consumption of gas, which compelled the corporation to found three additional gas- works. The maximum amount of gas which these works are (or will be) able to yield, is about one million cubic meters every 24 hours. At present a new large establish- ment is in course of construction near the village of Tegel which will produce 780000 cbm per diem. A plot of ground has already been purchased on the upper Spree for the purpose of setting up gas-works able to produce a similar quantity of gas as those at Tegel. On the 31st of March 1904, the number of ordinary gasometers set up by the municipal gas-works was 164 082, to which are added 16939 automatic ones. 29829 in- candescent gas-lamps were supplied with gas to light the public streets. 2 |
