HE AMERICAN ENGINEERS AT BERLIN.
(Reprinted from “The Engineer.)
At the invitation of Ludwig Loewe and Co. a
arge number of American ladies and gentlemen
who bad come to Europe with the So-
~jeties of American Mechanical and Civil En-
gineers, passed several days last week in
Berlin. It is impossible to imagine anything more
cordial or magnificent than the hospitality with
which they were entertained. A special train, com-
posed principally of wagons-lits, left Paris on Monday,
July 16th, about mid-day and conveyed the greater
part of the visitors to Berlin, where accommoda-
ion was provided for them in the Bristol and
Savoy hotels. No special arrangements were made
‘or Tuesday, as it was felt that after a long journey
many would desire to rest, whilst others more
energetic might be anxious to see the city. But
all Wednesday was spent by the ladies in visiting
the principal places of interest in Berlin, and by
‘he gentlemen in an inspection of the new machine
‘ool works of the company in the Huttenstrasse and
‘he rifle factory. The arrangements which were
made to render it possible for a large number to
see the works with pleasure and profit are beyond
all praise. The visitors were divided into small
oarties, and were conducted over the shops by
guides; the different departments were labelled and
numbered. The arrangement worked with mechanical
precision, the gentlemen reassembling almost to the
minute at the appointed places. In the evening
a banquet was provided in the Zoological Gardens.
Thursday was a day of pleasure trips only. The
norning was spent in the gardens of the palace
at Potsdam, in the palace itself, and at Sanssoucci.
Luncheon was served at Glienicker Bridge, and
the afternoon was passed on the beautiful lakes,
the steamer arriving at Wansee in time for
dinner, which was served .in the open air
ander the trees on the edge of the lake. The
scene was decorated with German, British, but
principally American flags and emblems in honour
of the guests, and an excellent band discoursed
music specially selected to give pleasure to the
Americans. The menu was also given an American
air, and in fact every endeavour was made to
show how cordially welcome Herr Loewe wished
‘0 make his company. On Friday business was
combined with pleasure. In the morning the
yumping station of the sewage system in
he Hafenplatz was inspected. A steamer, on
yoard which luncheon was served, then conveyed
he visitors from the Jannowitz Bridge to Miiggel-
iee, where the Municipal Waterworks- were
nspected by such of the visitors as were not
ncapacitated by the great heat of the day. The
steamer then returned to Berlin.
In the evening the visitors were invited to
linner by Mr. and Mrs. Loewe at their house.
Several speeches were made in the course of the
>vening by the more eminent persons present. They
vere, as became such a gathering, exceedingly
ordial and friendly in tone. This brought to a
onclusion the capital programme which we have
Ul too briefly outlined. There was not among
he visitors one who failed to be impressed with the.
riendliness with which they were received and the
nexhaustible hospitality of their hosts. The careful
‘orethought for small things as well as large, the
rovision for their comfort as well as their in-
itruction, engendered the kindliest and most grateful
eeling, whilst the largeness of the welcome and
he mechanical excellence of all the arrangements
sarticularly impressed them. There can be little
loubt that the good fellowship of the two nations
vill be increased by the courtesy shown by Herr
Loewe and his company.
It is not our intention to attempt any description
of the visits made by the engineers other than
‘hat to the machine tool works, and even in this
case we can only hope to succeed in giving our
-eaders a rough idea of an establishment in which
ne might spend a month rather than a day, and
till come away having learnt only a little of what
t could teach. Mr. Edgar Worthington gave us
‘he clue to the success of the works when, in
he course of an after-dinner speech, he laid stress
tpon the fact that they were built in an “empty
eld.” That is a fact which must be borne in
nind if one should attempt to compare such an
stablishment as this with any works of age and
"eputation in this country. It is the fact that Ludwig
Loewe and Co. started without any impediment in
he way of old buildings, old machines, old methods,
ve might almost say old men, that has enabled
hem to possess such a works. They started in
an empty field. They said, “We are prepared to
expend so much on buildings, so much on tools,
30 much on men, let us make that arrangement
which will give us the best return for our money.“
