empress. Another larger hall is used on special
occasions for concerts and theatrical representations.
Directly in front of the Imperial Palace stands Monu .
Rauch’s beautiful monument in bronze of Prederich ment
the Great, the corner-stone of which was laid in ofFre '
denck
June 1840, the model finished in 1842 and the the
cast made in 1846. It was unveiled on May 31 st Great
1851, is over 13 meters high, the figure on horseback
5,65 meters, and 800 Cwts. of metal were used in
its production. On a granit-base the bronze pedestal
of the monument shows the heroes of the seven
years war; on the four corners, mounted on horse
back Duke Ferdinand of Brunswick. Prince Henry
of Prussia, the bold general of hussars von Ziethen
and the great king's favourite commander, vonSeydlitz.
The other side of the pedestal shows represen
tative men of letters and science of those times,
among them Kant the philosopher, Lessing, the great
humanitarian, Graun, Gellert &c. The statue itself
shows the eminent monarch as he is portrayed in
many pictures, the crutch-cane on his arm, the three-
cornered hat on his head, clothed in his simple uniform.
Following up the Linden on the same side we
find next to the Imperial palace the fine brown stone
building of Prussia’s most solid Mortgage Banking
institution, the “Preussische Central-Boden-Credit-
The
Anstalt” and in it one of those glittering show-Joweiry
house
windows which are the delight of the traveller when of
1 . . 1 Hallor
he meets them on his promenades. This is the &•
r Rathe-
shop of Messrs. HALLER & RATHENAU, Jewellers nau.
