Der Brief des amerikanischen Botschafters Richard Washburn Child, auf den in dem 
obigen Schreiben hingewiesen ist, lautet: 
Embassy of the United States of America. June 26, 1922. 
My dear Colleague! 
LI desire to express my deepest sympathy with you and your government at 
the death of Dr. Rathenau. I hope that you will find it appropriate to transmit 
to Dr. Rathenau’s family or relatives my great appreciation for the privilege of 
his acquaintance. Though short, 1 profited by it, for Dr. Rathenau had qualities 
of a great and kind nature and 1 will carry the memory of him through the years.

Dear Frau Rathenau! 
On my return to Berlin my first thought is to express to you my deepest 
sympathy with the terrible loss which you have sustained, 
It must be some consolation to you to know that the entire world regards 
your son as one of the most brilliant intellects which recent times have produced, 
and considers his death as a grave loss not only for Germany but for Europe. 
1 shall always esteem my friendship with him to have been amongst the in- 
teresting experiences of my life.

Veuillez me permettre de vous exprimer mes {r&s — vives et respectueuses 
condolgances dans le deuil si eruel qui vient de vous atteindre. La main qui a 
frappe si sauvagement le Docteur Rathenau ne vous enl&ve pas seulement un fils 
dont vous aviez le droit d’&tre fi&re, elle enl&ve ä Allemagne un de ses meilleurs 
et plus utiles citoyens. 
Je vous prie d’agreer, Madame, mon hommage attriste.
