Roof greening and biodiversity One of the most exciting green roof projects in Germany is located on the roof of the visitor centre at the IGA Berlin 2017 international garden show. The targeted use of various biodiversity modules has created a flagship project for biodiversity in urban spaces that can also be transferred to other roofgreening projects. Where a boring gravel covering would generally be expected, the 2,000 m² roof of the visitor centre at the IGA features a biodiverse green roof with the following biodiversity modules: ■■ Landscaping with varying substrate heights ■■ Different substrate qualities ■■ Sand mounds and beds of coarse gravel as vegetation-free areas ■■ Temporary water surfaces ■■ Planting of a range of species ■■ Nesting places for insects ■■ Use of deadwood The roof can be viewed from a visitors’ platform during the period that the IGA is taking place. Scientific monitoring of the effectiveness of the various meas- ures is being carried out in cooperation with the Technical University of Berlin. This biodiverse green roof will be an important reference project for the German Roof Gardener Association (Deutscher Dachgärtner Verband) to help promote increased consideration of biodiversity as part of new green roof projects in the future. An “upgrade” of existing extensive green roofs with just a few species to create a biodiversity roof can of course also be achieved by using the modules in a targeted manner. The biodiversity roof on the visitors’ centre at the IGA Berlin 2017 is a joint project by the following partners: German Roof Gardener Association, IGA Berlin 2017, Grün Berlin GmbH, fairplants-system GmbH, ZinCo GmbH, Technical University of Berlin, FehrleStauden GmbH, Rieger-Hofmann GmbH, Schwegler Vogel- und Naturschutzprodukte, Kusche und Dremel GmbH Baumdienst, Specialist Association for the Creation of Gardens, Landscaping and Sports Facilities Berlin and Brandenburg (Fachverband Garten-, Landschafts- und Sportplatzbau Berlin und Brandenburg), and Ausbildungsförderwerk Berlin e.
