The future of cities – together with challenges such as demographic change, climate-adaptation strategies and the necessary adaptation of social and urban infrastructure – will be determined by the
quality of the buildings in the built city to a significant extent. In this context, the development of ecological building concepts and overall ecological concepts across various disciplines and subject areas
will make a significant contribution to delivering liveable cities.
The planning of construction projects should adhere to the principles that
■■ The environment and natural resources are protected
■■ The highest possible degree of environmental compatibility and social responsibility is targeted
■■ Healthy long-term living and working conditions are implemented and ensured
The development and testing of new processes and technologies for selected projects and model projects for the adaptation of ecological standards to reflect the latest knowledge are important prerequisites for this.

The Senate Department for Urban Development and Housing has built up comprehensive knowledge
in relation to topics in ecological building through the development, accompaniment and evaluation
of model projects on ecological building that are carried out in close cooperation with project and
cooperation partners. Results and knowledge in buildings research is of benefit not just to the environment, but to residents too. At the same time, the documentation and presentation of project experience should contribute to improving the level of knowledge of participants and stakeholders. Research
findings should also be transferred into practice and further refined. Specific agreements and tasks in
this regard have been included in the coalition agreement for the 2016 –2021 legislative period.
Interlinking between the subject areas of energy, water, greenery, building materials and waste in
overall ecological concepts and the integration of new processes and technologies as part of the planning, construction and operation of buildings and other facilities are prerequisites for the success of
ecological building.
The principle of sustainability – i. e. attaching equal levels of importance to ecological, economic and
social goals – is already to be taken into account when selecting measures as part of planning, construction, operation and maintenance.
With the “Berlin is building the future – Ecological building concepts (Berlin baut Zukunft – Ökologische
Gebäudekonzepte)” series of exhibitions, we wish to use case studies to arouse curiosity about processes and technologies and to encourage further discussion.
