Benchmarks to demographic, economic, social, cultural and political structures of Berlin are presented in Chapter 1 to 27. The results are compared to previous years. The brochure also contains information on the city’s boroughs (Chapter 28), data on Berlin‘s development since 1871 (Chapter 29) and figures for the region of Berlin/Brandenburg (Chapter 30). On December 31, 2013 the area of Berlin covered 892 km². 41.5 percent of it were buildings and associated open spaces and 14.9 percent traffic areas. Recreation area covered 11.9 and production area 0.6 percent. In 2013, Berlin had approximately 35,000 live births. The number of deaths was 33,000, which leads to a surplus of births of 2,000 people. Berlin registered in 2013 a migration surplus of 42,000 people. In the calculation of population development only results have been considered with date after May 9, 2011 (Census Day). The present flow data may therefore differ from the results of the birth, death and migration statistics. At the end of 2013 Berlin had 3,421,829 inhabitants, 46,607 persons more compared to the beginning of the year. 538,729 foreigners lived in Berlin at the end of 2013. 1.9 million households were counted 2013 in Berlin. 54 percent of them were single-person households. 327,000 families with children under the age of 18 lived in Berlin. In the school year 2013/14 approximately 324,000 pupils visited general education schools, including 9.7 percent private schools. In the winter semester 2013 / 14 there were 166,000 students in Berlin, including 49.3 percent women. 67 percent of students were enrolled at universities. 27.2 percent were students in the fields of law, economics and social sciences, and 21.6 percent of engineering. 2013, practiced 18,923 physicians and 3,956 dentists in Berlin. The 81 hospitals in Berlin possessed 20,070 Beds in. The average length of stay was 7.6 days. In 2013, there were approximately 21,000 recipients of continual subsistence payment, 71,000 recipients of basic security in old age and disability and 59,000 benefits under the 5th to 9th Chapter of SGB XII. 6,641 dwellings were built in Berlin in 2013, almost a quarter more than in the previous year. Most dwellings were built in in the boroughs of Pankow and Mitte. Nearly 46,000 business registrations were registered in 2013 for Berlin. This was 3.9 percent less than in previous year. With approximately 35,000 business deregistrations there was a decrease of 5 percent. Berlin's economy grew by 1.2 percent in 2013. The year before the economic output had in-creased by 0.6 percent. In 2014, the European Parliament elections took place. The SPD with 24.0 percent of the votes in Berlin is the strongest party in Berlin, followed by the CDU with 20.0 percent and the Greens with 19.1 percent. »DIE kleine BERLIN-STATIS­ TIK 2014« gives an initial overview of the data provided by official statistics. A similar brochure has been published for the federal state of Brandenburg (»DIE kleine BRANDENBURGSTATISTIK 2014«). Both booklets are also published in German. Die kleine Berlin-Statistik For the past eleven years in a row Berlin reports increasing numbers of visitors and overnight stays. With 26.9 million overnight stays, the result of 2012 was exceeded by 8.2 percent. The number of visitors increased in 2013 to 11.3 million, or by 4.4 percent.
