Recreation area covered 11.9 and production area 0.6 percent. This brochure is divided into chapters on different topics. Chapters 1 – 27 present figures on the city’s demographic, economical, social, cultural and political structures. The results are compared to previous years. The brochure also contains information on the city’s boroughs (Chapter 28), data on Berlin‘s development since 1871 (Chapter 29) and figures for the region of Berlin/Brandenburg (Chapter 30). At the end of 2012 Berlin had 3,375,222 inhabitants. The number of visitors increased in 2012 to 10.8 million, or by 10 percent. The average length of stay of tourists in Berlin in 2012 was unchanged at 2.3 days. in the previous year. About a third thereof, 1,847, are condominiums. 4,205 new dwellings were built. Due to construction work on existing buildings created 1,212 dwellings. Most dwellings were built in in the boroughs of Pankow, Treptow-Köpenick and Lichtenberg. Nearly 48,100 business registrations were registered in 2012 for Berlin. This was 1.3 percent less than in previous year. Business deregistrations increased by 8.3 percent to 36,600 messages. Berlin’s economy grew by 1.2 percent in 2012. The year before the economic output had increased by 2.0 percent. In 2013, the elections to the German Parliament (Deutscher Bundestag) took place. The CDU with 28.5 percent of the second votes is the strongest party in Berlin, followed by the SPD with 24.6 percent and the party »DIE LINKE« with 18.5 percent. »DIE kleine BERLIN-STATISTIK 2013« gives an initial over- view of the data provided by official statistics.
