This brochure is divided into chapters on different topics. Chapters 1 – 27 present figures on the city's demographic, economical, social, cultural and political structures. As far as possible, developments have been highlighted by comparing with the figures for the years 2003, 2007 and 2011. The brochure also contains information on the city’s boroughs (Chapter 28), data on Berlin‘s development since 1871 (Chapter 29) and accumulated figures for the region of Berlin/Brandenburg (Chapter 30). On 31 December 2011 the area of Berlin covered 892 km². 369 km² of it were Buildings and associated open spaces and 133 km² traffic areas. Their share was 41.4 and 14.9 percent. At the end of 2011 Berlin had 3,501,872 inhabitants. Compared to the beginning of the year that has been 41,147 persons more. Therewith the registered population increase continiously increased since the year 2005. At the end of 2011 478,212 foreigners lived in Berlin. Represented most citizens of Turkey with 22.3 percent and Poland with 8.6 percent. At the end of 2011, there were 2.0 million dwellings in Berlin, 4,424 more than at the end of 2010. Most of these new dwellings were built in Pankow (1,161) and Lichtenberg (762). 2011 there were in Berlin 2.0 million households. 54 percent of them were Single-person households. With around 22.4 million overnight stays in accommodation establishments in Berlin as well as 9.9 million guests once again The national economic in Berlin developed positive in 2011. The price-adjusted gross domestic product increased by 2.3 percent. The medium-term analysis of price-adjusted economic development shows a slightly but steadily upward development since 1991, however, a decrease in 2009. In 2011 there were two large elections in Berlin. Besides the Berlin Chamber of Deputies (Berliner Abgeordnetenhaus) also the elections to the Borough council Assemblies (Be zirksverordnetenversammlungen). The SPD with 28.3 percent of the second votes is the strongest party in Berlin, followed by the CDU with 23.3 percent and the party »Bündnis 90/Die Grünen« with 17.6 percent. »DIE kleine BERLINSTATISTIK 2012« gives an initial overview of the data provided by official statistics. A similar brochure has been published for the federal state of Brandenburg (»DIE kleine BRANDENBURG-STATISTIK 2012«). Those interested can also find a similarly structured selection of figures and data for the Federal Republic of Germany as well as benchmark figures for the German federal states in the »Pocketbook: Germany«, published by the Federal Statistical Office and under www. statistikportal.de. Die kleine Berlin-Statistik the figures of the previous year were surpassed and thereby broke the record for the ninth time in a row. The accommodation establishments announced 9 percent more arrivals of guests and 7.5 percent more overnight stays than in 2010. 01.1 City Area Geographical location City centre – Berlin Town Hall – 52° 31‘ 12“ north latitude 13° 24‘ 36“ east longitude Local time 6 minutes 22 seconds behind Central European Time 112 o’clock CET = 11:53:38 Berlin local time Length of border 234 km Largest expansion 45 km, east-west 38 km, north-south County of Oberhavel Velten Bernau Hohen Neuendorf Zepernick Hennigsdorf Werneuchen County of Barnim County of Havelland Pankow Reinickendorf Altlandsberg Falkensee Spandau Lichtenberg Mitte CharlottenburgWilmersdorf County of Märkisch–Oderland MarzahnHellersdorf FriedrichshainKreuzberg TempelhofSchöneberg SteglitzZehlendorf Neukölln TreptowKöpenick Potsdam Teltow County of Potsdam- Mittelmark County of Teltow-Fläming 0 2 4 6 8 10 km County of Dahme-Spreewald County of Oder-Spree 01.2 City Area ha City area .................................. 89,175 Land use Buildings and associated open spaces.............
