Die kleine Berlin-Statistik
Introduction
»DIE kleine BERLIN-STATISTIK 2011« (statistics for the
City of Berlin, 2011, key facts
and figures) offers information
on the development of the German capital based on the most
important statistical results.
On December, 31, 2010 the surface of Berlin covered 892 km².
Of it were allotted 626,8 km² to
the settlement and traffic surfaces. The proportion of the settlement and traffic surfaces
was 70,3 percent.
This document is divided into
chapters on different topics.
Chapters 1 – 27 present figures
on the city's demographic, economical, social, cultural and political structures. As far as possible, developments have been
highlighted by comparing with
the figures for the years 2002,
2006 and 2010. The docu-ment
also contains information on
the city’s boroughs (Chapter
28), data on Berlin‘s development since 1871 (Chapter 29)
and accumulated figures for the
region of Berlin / Brandenburg
(Chapter 30).
Berlin had at the end of 2010
3,460,725 inhabitants. In relation to the conditions of the
yearly beginning that was
18,050 persons more. With it
since the year 2005 the registered increase in the population
continued to continue. At the
end of 2010 457,806 foreigners
living in Berlin.
At the end of 2010, there were
1.9 million dwellings in Berlin,
4,243 more than at the end of
2009. Most of these new dwellings were built in Pankow
(1,446) and FriedrichshainKreuzberg (695).
With approximately 20.8 million overnight spent in accommodation establishments in
Berlin as well as 9.1 million
guests were once again surpassing the figures of the previous year and thereby breaking
The national economic development in Berlin fell in 2010
from positive. In Berlin increased price-adjusted gross
domestic product by 2.2 percent. The medium-term analysis of price-adjusted economic
development shows that Berlin
since 1991, steadily, if slightly
upward developed, but only in
2009 had a setback.
In the year 2011 there were two
large elections in Berlin. Besides the choice of the Berlin
Chamber of Deputies (Berliner
Abgeordnetenhaus) also found
the elections to the Borough
council Assemblies (Bezirksverordnetenversammlungen).
The SPD with 28.3 percent of
the second votes is the strongest party in Berlin, followed by
the CDU with 23.3 percent and
the party Grüne with 17.6 percent.
»DIE kleine BERLINSTATISTIK 2011« gives an
initial overview of the data
provided by official statistics. A similar brochure has
been published for the federal state of Brandenburg
(»DIE kleine BRANDENBURG-STATISTIK 2011«).
Those interested can also
find a similarly structured
selection of fig-ures and
data for the Federal Republic
of Germany as well as
benchmark figures for the
German federal states in the
»Pocketbook: Germany«,
published by the Federal
Statistical Office and under
www. statistikportal.de.
Die kleine Berlin-Statistik
the record for the eight time in
a row. The accommodating establishments announced 9.5
percent more arrivals of guest
and 10.2 percent more overnight accommodation than in
the year 2009.

The stage statistics provide
an overview of the type,
number and attendance
of events of the public and
private stages. Not all private stages and theatre
groups participate in the
survey. The respective season begins 1 August of the
previous year and ends on
31 July of the year under
review. Further data is
made available by the

the Federal Office for
Motor Traffic (KraftfahrtBundesamt). Data on
traffic accidents are taken
from police accident
reports. The number of
bridges as well as the
length of public roads are
determined by the Berlin

14 National Accounts
National accounts (VGR)
are a statistical system
for presenting a comprehensive, overall view of
the economic activities of
all business entities in
Berlin. They are based on
the European System of
national accounts (ESA
1995) and the Classification of Industries (WZ
2003). At the centre of
national accounts is the
origin of the gross domestic
product (GDP) as a measure
of performance in Berlin.

16.1 Employment and Compensation of Employees
The number of employed persons along
with their wages and
salaries are determined
within the scope of national account based on
the Klassifikation der
Wirtschaftszweige
WZ 2003 (Classification
of Industries). The figures on the number of
employed persons correspond to the workplace concept; that is,
all employed persons
who have their job in
Berlin are taken into
consideration. In the result for income creation
the figure for employee
earnings reflects all of
the cash and non-cash
benefits accrued to employees working in Berlin from work or other
employment relationships.

The foreign trade statistics
provide figures with regard
to the movement of goods
across the frontiers (export
and import) between Berlin
and foreign countries. The
basis for the results is provided by the customs documents of importers and
exporters in the trading
industry with countries outside of the European Union
(extra trade) as well as the
statistical registrations of
acquisitions and deliveries
within the community
within the meaning of the
Value-Added Tax Law
(intra trade).

21 Consumer Prices
The index of consumer
prices shows the monthly
development of consumer
prices. Thus it is considered
to be a general measure of
the change in the purchasing power. The basis for calculating the index is a commodity basket with
approximately 700 goods
and services (price representatives). In accordance
with their share in the overall expenditures of private
households in the respective price base year (here:
2005), they are incorporated into the index calculation with different values
(weights).

The construction price indices show the quarterly development of the prices realised by Berlin building
companies for certain types
of construction work and
certain types of structures
as well as for various types
of maintenance work on
buildings, independently of
the site of performance. The
selected construction work
and building types are also
included in a uniform federal weighting scheme of
specified shares (weights)
when it come to calculating
the price index. The base
year for the building cost
indices at present is 2005.
