Ausland THEMEN At the final press conference the participants pointed out that an efficient ex- change of information is important for the Belarusian as well as for the global scientific community. They mentioned the achieved results and explained what they plan in future concerning the cooperation with the German colleagues. Unanimously they emphasized the success of the seminar. The organizers received special thanks for their highly professional realization. The partici- pants appreciated the warm atmosphere of the seminar and the pleasant range of activities and dialogues. All the participants appreciated as well the joint efforts of the German and Bel- arusian library experts who prepared the seminar and realized this project. Be- sides some special contributors in organizing have to be mentioned extra: Mrs. Sigrun Eckelmann (German Scientific Society), Mrs. Beate Cochlovius (Goethe-Institut) and Mr. Petr Lapo, Director of the library of BSU and his staff. Thanks to their care we had a fine opportunity to exchange our experiences and information, to elaborate the plans of our future cooperation. Such meetings play a significant role in our life and help to develop our work dynamically. The achieved knowledge will help the leaders of our libraries to enhance the service for our clients. In carrying on a constructive dialogue with the foreign colleagues they will find the best way of cooperation. The cultural exchange is most important to develop a human society. Each state in our world, even the most powerful, is not capable of satisfying all the needs of the citizens without the reference to a global cultural heritage and to the intellectual achievements of other nations. No library in the world can col- lect all publications. The obvious solution is to combine our efforts and to grant access to each others' resources. As today information becomes outdated faster, every profession needs con- stant updating of knowledge and permanent development. This is particularly important for librarians because they are the ones to provide society with rele- vant information. Without doubt the Belarusian participants of the seminar will promote the creation of joint information networks in our countries after the experiences they have made. The international cooperation will enable us to train our staff in modern information technologies. Then we can integrate our national scien- tific resources in international information networks. The quality of life of our citizens will improve if our libraries work efficiently and fulfil their social role. BIBLIOTHEKSDIENST 36. Jg. (2002), H. 5 573
