Monographic or Periodic?

Distinguishing Features and Where to Find Them

You can recognise the type of a publication by

  1. type of closure (planned or unplanned)
  2. count (available or not available)
  3. frequency of publication (one-time, regular or irregular)

To determine whether a publication is self-contained or not, you can refer to keywords in the title and the foreword for a first impression of the content. Keywords such as “update”, “Volume 1”, “Section A” and similar indicate an unfinished work.

The count and publication frequency can be found on the cover and in the imprint. The imprint is usually located on the first or last page of a publication and often also appears in the table of contents.

Monographs

  • single, independent publications
  • single author or group of authors
  • specific topic
  • self-contained in terms of content
  • independent of other publications (not part of a journal or collection)

Examples:

Novels, dissertations, biographies ...

Periodicals

  • superordinate title
  • individual editions are published at regular intervals (daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, annually, every x years ...)
  • conclusion is not planned from the outset

Each edition is labelled with a consecutive number so that the order of publication is traceable, and editions can be clearly identified

Examples of consecutive counts:

Art der Nummerierung Beispiel
Jahrgang, Heft Jg. 1, H. 1
Volumen, Nummer Band 1, Nummer 4
Ausgabe, Monatsangabe Ausgabe Juni 2005; auch 6/2005
Jahreszeiten Frühjar 2018; auch 1/2018
Semester, Berichtsjahr(e) Wintersemester 1999/2000
Fortlaufende Nummerierung Ausgabe 141

Examples of periodical publications:

Newspapers, journals, magazines, newsletters, circulars, statistical reports, yearbooks, annual and business reports, registers and publications that appear regularly every x years, such as updates of concepts.

Special Case: Publication Series (Monographic Series)

  • consists of several monographs
  • self-contained but cover the same overarching theme
  • publications within a monographic series may be numbered to indicate their place in the sequence.

One example from our digital state library is the DESI publication series of which we currently hold 5 volumes.

Only if you are submitting a publication series, please also fill in the fields "Relationship to other resources" on the form and enter the series title and the numbering.
